Eat More Cheese

There are many researchers who believe that the protein found in cheese called casein could help your teeth.  These researchers believe that casein will promote tooth health and could help prevent tooth decay and cavities  This is due to research showing that the calcium levels in the mouth increase after you eat cheese.  As teeth are partly made up of calcium the increase levels in the saliva will help to restore some of the calcium that the teeth have lost.

Chew Gum

Chewing sugar-free gum has long been a recommendation to avoid cavities.  It is very important that you not chew gum that has sugar in it because this will be bad for your teeth.  You need to ensure that the gum is sweetened with Xylitol which is a natural sugar substitute.  Xylitol is known to fight cavities and will help to prevent any further tooth decay from occurring.

Sugar-Free Candy

If you want to fight cavities you do not have to go off candy completely.  You simply need to eat sugar-free candy as this has the potential of preventing tooth decay.  Again, you will be looking for candy that is sweetened with Xylitol.  You should only consume 5 grams of Xylitol per day to get all of the cavity-fighting benefits that it has.

Drink Wine

Wine, particularly red wine, has long been considered bad for teeth because of the stains that it can leave behind.  However, there is a study which shows that the components in red and white wine can help to fight the bacteria which cause tooth decay as well as cavities.  While these results are promising, it is important to note that researchers have stated that lab tests do not always translate into positive real-life situations.  The fact that this is a single study should also be considered because there is no additional research to back this up.

Eat Raisins

Raisins, like wine, have long been seen as bad for your teeth, but scientists have found that certain chemicals in raisins fight the bacteria that cause cavities.  Of course, many dentists are still unsure about this because there have been no real-life tests completed and all the data for this does come from lab studies.  Researchers have stated that there needs to be further study to see if the benefits of raisins actually outweigh the cavity causing properties that they have.

There are a number of foods that we know to stay away from if we want to have good teeth.  However, there are also a number of foods that we should look at eating to improve the health of our teeth.  Cheese is one of these foods as are gum and candy which has been sweetened with Xylitol.
